The main challenge of this whole first floor remodel was to create a more open-concept home, update the interior aesthetic, and increase functionality of the home while preserving the unique architectural character (the original architect was student of Frank Lloyd Wright). Vaulted ceilings, window walls, unusually shaped windows, arches, lowered ceilings, wood slotted ceilings, and decks are all FLW inspired elements. The kitchen relocated from the front of the house to the back of the house for an open, inviting, functional space with a lake view. What used to be the kitchen became a laundry room and utility closet, now more practical for its size. Optimal space utilization was achieved through repositioning and eliminating wasted space. The removal of some wood paneling and 4” overhangs brightened and vertically elevated the space. Painted ceilings and added trim, molding, modern light fixtures. New hardwood floors were incorporated throughout and unique tile for bathrooms, and mudroom.
